Tipsy Talk #4: Consumerism! Can We Control It?

Consumerism: How We’re All Susceptible to It — and Can We Control It?

This week’s episode of Tipsy Talk felt especially real and reflective. Cat and I poured a drink, hit record, and dove into a topic that hits all of us whether we realize it or not: consumerism.

Let’s be honest — we live in a world where “buy now” culture is everywhere. Whether it’s a TikTok haul, an Instagram ad, or that perfectly curated influencer content… it’s always in our face. And I’ll be the first to admit — I’m a sucker for great marketing. Who isn’t?

But in this episode, Cat and I got honest about how easy it is to fall into the trap of always wanting more. More clothes, more skincare, more kitchen gadgets, more everything. So we’re doing something about it.

Our 3-Month Challenge: Use What You Have

We made a commitment: for the next three months, we’re hitting pause on buying things we want and focusing on using what we have. It’s a challenge rooted in gratitude, resourcefulness, and awareness. The truth is — we don’t need more stuff. We need to appreciate what we already own, get creative with it, and be intentional about what we bring into our lives.

It’s not about depriving ourselves — it’s about resetting. Becoming more mindful. Spending with purpose. And yes, saving some money while we’re at it.

Real Talk on Money, Self-Worth & Social Pressure

Personally, one of my big themes this year is saving money and getting smarter about how I use it. And when I really looked at where my money was going, so much of it came back to consumerism. That emotional, almost impulsive buying we all do because we saw it in a Reel or someone we follow said it was “life-changing.”

And here’s the vulnerable part — sometimes, I catch myself equating having nice things with being enough. Like if I don’t have that cute water bottle or that designer bag, or those expensive jeans maybe I’m behind. But that’s not the truth — and this challenge is helping me rewire that mindset.

It’s about detaching our self-worth from our stuff and coming back to what actually matters.

What Else We Talked About…

Aside from our no-spend challenge, we also recapped my recent Charleston trip, talked summer reflections, and shared goals as we transition into fall. There’s something about this time of year — the shift in seasons brings a fresh energy and a chance to reset.

Join Us in the Challenge

If you’ve ever looked at your bank account and thought, “Where did all my money go?” or found yourself in a rabbit hole of online shopping, this episode is for you. We’re inviting you to do this challenge with us. No pressure, just intention.

We’ll be talking more about it in the next Tipsy Talk, sharing updates, reflections, and probably a few “I almost bought this but didn’t” moments — because hey, it’s real life.

Let’s be more mindful. Let’s spend with purpose. And let’s see what happens when we stop filling our carts and start filling our cups.
